Private Testing Information

Testing must be done in English and administered by a Licensed Psychologist or Licensed Psychological Associate who has experience completing intellectual assessment.

Privately administered cognitive abilities tests accepted by Scholars Academy for the purpose of admissions are:

  • Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children V (WISC V)
  • Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence IV (WPPSI IV)
  • Woodcock Johnson Cognitive Test

Any one of the above tests will suffice for the testing requirement. We will accept testing administered on or after September 2023 for this 2025-2026 application period. Testing report must be received by the application deadline of February 7, 2025 for the application to be considered. School administered tests are not accepted.

A psychologist in your area can be found through psychologytoday.com or through a general internet search for area psychologists who administer IQ/academic testing.

You will need to provide THIS FORM to psychologist at the time of testing. The psychologist will then need to complete the form and email it directly to admissions@scholarsacademy.org.

Note If your child has taken one of the three private tests within the past year, they must take a different test rather than repeat the same test.  Taking the same test again within a 12 month window invalidates the test.

Group Testing Information

Scholars Academy provides a free group test to gather test scores necessary for admission.  The group test is offered for families who choose not to have individual IQ testing completed for their child.  The group test is not an IQ test, but a test Scholars Academy uses to determine a student’s possible success at SA.

Testing will occur at Scholars Academy on Saturday January 25, 2025 & February 1, 2025. Families will be notified in mid-January as to which date their child will take the test.

Note

  • Scholars Academy cannot accommodate specific requests for a testing date.
  • Scholars Academy does not receive the results of the group test in time for you to also decide to do a private IQ test.
  • The window to participate in Group Testing closed on December 18.

Early Entry to Kindergarten Process

The North Carolina General Assembly passed BH-1099, allowing early admission to kindergarten of a child who will reach their 5th birthday by April 16th of their kindergarten year if the child demonstrates extraordinary academic ability and maturity. Early entry standards used by Scholars Academy, in accordance with our overall admissions process, are as follows:

  1. Two forms of private testing: Early entry applicants are not eligible for our free group test and must test privately with a licensed psychologist or licensed psychological associate. Parents are responsible for arranging and paying for the IQ and achievement testing.
    1. Cognitive Abilities test:The child shall score at least two standard deviations above the mean on one of the three private tests accepted by Scholars Academy.
        • Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children V (WISC V)
        • Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence IV (WPPSI IV)
        • The Woodcock Johnson Cognitive Test

Please note that an early entry kindergartener will not be deemed as an automatic qualified applicant if their IQ score falls three or more deviations above the mean on an accepted IQ test. For the avoidance of doubt, students with an IQ test score below two standard deviations above the mean on an acceptable IQ test are not qualified for admission into Scholars Academy.

    2. Achievement test: The child shall score at the 98th percentile or above on either Reading or Mathematics on a standard test such as the Metropolitan Readiness Test, the Stanford Early School Achievement test, the Woodcock-Johnson, or any other comparable test that shall be administered by a licensed psychologist.

  1. Completed kindergarten application(that includes the following):
    • Online Application Form
    • Personal Nomination Form
    • Your child’s test results from a licensed professional
    • Testing Verification Form from the testing professional
    • Testing Verification Form from parent/guardian

It is important to note that early entry applicants are reviewed at the same time as all of our other applicants. After this review, an in person interview with the early entry child might be requested to evaluate their readiness for kindergarten here at Scholars Academy. The child should demonstrate social and emotional maturity sufficient to participate in a structured setting for a full school day. The child should be capable of following verbal instructions and functioning independently within a group.

Following the review by our admissions committee, all applicants (including early entry) will receive notification at the same time as to whether or not they have qualified for our lottery. There are three potential outcomes for those applying for early entry to kindergarten:

  1. Child is not a qualified applicant. You are welcome to reapply for the child during the next year’s application period, but you will need to submit a new application packet.
  2. Child is a qualified early entry applicant for kindergarten and therefore receives a lottery number for this year’s kindergarten lottery.
  3. Child may be deemed as not qualified for early entry, but is qualified for the following year’s kindergarten lottery. This is considered a lottery deferral.
